Post Kingston Bypass plan open for feedback
If you only make one representation to a council regarding an application for planning approval this year - make it this one!

Personally I feel that the proposal is a real disappointment as it stands, and will not only contribute nothing to improving cyclists' safety, but will also make some existing roads more dangerous for us. Given the Kingborough council's assertions that they are cyclist-friendly, I'm very surprised to see that the only thought to cyclists in such a major project is some poorly thought-out bike lanes on what will be a highly dangerous roundabout for us. This project has been a long time in planning, and with the current focus on cycling at a State level it would be a shame to see it stuffed up!

The major issues I see for cyclists are traversing the new Algona Rd rounabout in all directions - but particularly Northbound where they will have to cross the turnout lane to the new bypass (which will carry a lot of traffic) in order to enter the roundabout. This will make continuing along the Channel Highway a perilous exercise to say the least! And secondly the Summerleas Rd overpass will also be a hazard unless it has decent bike lanes - ideally separated from traffic lanes. The existing Maccas roundabout isn't getting any attention, so presumably it will still be the same deathtrap it always has been...

Yes a multilane roundabout is bad.
An alternative for northbound would be to ride along the bypass then back in to the McBlecch roundabout via Summerleas.
The McBlecch roundabout would get less cars through it so some improvement.
What we need is an improved design.
I'd look at making the Algona roundabout much smaller, adding a soutbound straight through lane for the bypass to Margate, and adding an underpass for the Algona traffic to reach the northbound bypass. However that would not help cyclists
The good news is the northbound access from Margate to Algone roundabout is downhill so crossing to the right lane is not quite so bad.
Yes DIER usually make overpasses/bridges too narrow. A decent width is the go; but only 4.5m of lane each way, otherwise They will make it 2 narrow high speed lanes each way in future.
