Parity is the very reason the laws have been introduced!

The penalties mentioned are only the maximums and it is very unlikely they would be applied in any given case. For comparison, the maximum penalty for negligent driving causing serious injury in Victoria was doubled last year to 10 years' imprisonment - so I think parity is achieved, at least in the laws themselves. I have serious concerns about whether there is parity in their application, but that's an issue for the police and courts, not lawmakers.

I do think the Minister's focus on cyclists is laughable when talking about the goal of a 30% reduction in road deaths though. Typical blame-the-victim media circus...

Agreed. While the Hell ride related death was regrettable how many column inches did it get compared to any number of pedestrian hit and runs or cyclists being killed/injured by vehicles.
