Managed to find some time to ride since coming over here to Melbourne. Can recommend the Bayside Cycleway from South Melbourne to Sandringham and beyond for a touristy, picnicky sort of spin. Actually, provided your bike's fitted with puncture proofs, you could road bike from Sorrento to Queenscliffe with barely a road section in sight.
The cycle lanes, where fitted, as yet have not led me into danger, although the green lanes across Fitzroy St and Queens Rd where Nepean Hwy becomes St Kilda Rd are NOT for the faint of heart. You'll find yourself riding 100m or so with 70km/h traffic on either side of you! It's hairy, but people seem to get that it's OK.
Not regretting the move one bit so far, and swine flu's a beatup, hardly any of it in the southeast, it's all those dirty westies ;)
