I saw a few of them on ebay about a month ago. I bet you're looking there though. Why the interest in the Softride?

According to a physio,it's the only road bike recommended for peope who suffer from back pain...

According to a physio,it's the only road bike recommended for peope who suffer from back pain... I spent nearly 20 years struggling with back pain and the first thing that I found could fix it was a slight shortening of my seat height so that my legs were a fraction short of straightening out. Other things that help are seat position (fore/aft), seat angle and stem height. You can clinic your ride position. Bit hard in Tassy, but take the time at a bike shop that is popular with the racing set and get them to adjust your existing bike. I'm told Appleby's in Hobart are really good at this, as are the guys at Self's too. Keep looking for the softride, they are good for solution if your back probs continue to bother you, but clinic the bike and your ergonomics in the meantime (and get it done to the softy when you get it, too)

I agree with Iguana. For free I can check your current position. I've watched cyclists for many years. The leg position issue is a well known one ig! It also leads to achilles pain. Too low can lead to knee pain, but many racers go this way because it enhances spin - less thigh movement required. I'd like to see research backing up the claim of the softride being better. It sounds anecdotal from someone who does not ride. When I need physio (since I run, swim, and have the occasional injury) I go to Sports Care in Murray St. They have no issue with diamond frames. If your problem is neck, like mine is currently with a pinched nerve, then a recumbent is the go.

According to a physio,it's the only road bike recommended for peope who suffer from back pain... A MTB with rear suspension does a similar thing but it sounds like you want a 'race' type bike... You can 'bunch ride' one of these but if you intend to race it you can't have a 'softride' in organised races, only triathlons. Bear in mind of course the continuing flex varies the distance between the saddle and pedals, but not with a MTB. This in itself can be problematic physiologically. Is your physio a rider? I understand what your physio is saying but a softride? I wouldn't touch one with 'yours'. ;)

According to a physio,it's the only road bike recommended for peope who suffer from back pain... Remember this is NOT a road bike. Its a TRIATHLON bike. Roadies scorn them for good reason.

I have a degenerative spinal condition, which cannot be rectified. I currently ride a quality dual suspension mtb. I can ride approx 20 minutes until the pain sets in. After conducting some research, the Softride might be able to prolong the length of time I can actually ride. Like everybody else here,I am passionate about bike riding.I just want to be able to ride t a little bit more.

iguanaman- 12-20-2007

Degenerative? Bummer. I'll keep my eyes peeled for one (or many or bits) then.

mezza- 12-20-2007

At 19 I was told I have spinal degeneration and told I should never ride a bike or go 'backpacking'. Apparently I had the spine of a 50 year old. I'm now 34 and ride regularly with NO back pain. Oh, and I can lift okay too. Doctors can be wrong.

...and Dr Mezza can be an insensitive twat, sometimes, but we still love him. (They call that "loving acceptance" in psychobable circles, I think ;) )

Gyro- 12-20-2007

I have spinal degeneration too. Mainly thoracic vertebrae. No pain in that region though. Neck is wrong from depression mixed with upright bikes. C7 is way out of position.

...and Dr Mezza..... Finally, some recognition for my knowledge of, um, ummmmm - stuff.
